NFL Week: Offseason

Back for 2010

2009 just didn't happen, but we are back for 2010! There will be some funkiness at the start--players on the wrong team, etc.--but the first week's point processing should take care of most of that. Welcome back or just plain welcome. Stay and play!

Thanks for a great 2008

We're offline until the pre-season starts, but I want to take a quick minute to say thanks to all that participated in 2008. We got a lot of work through the mill and I'm excited to get even more done in 2009.

So check back in August to see what we've got going and I'll be counting the minutes until it's time to start another quest for glory! Have a great summer,

Site revamp

I wanted to clarify the two sections of the site somewhat and add some visibility into the results we are getting.

So I added two sections, Player Projections and Compare Starters, that allow the user to view past and current results all in one place.

I left the main vote link in place to enourage users to continue voting and the index page is still basically the same.

Also, one thing that was bugging me was the preponderance of users at 100% on the leaderboard who had clearly only voted once. Next season I will implement a minimum votes-per-week strategy, but for now I figured a 5 vote minimum was sufficient to keep those in who have put in some effort and still weed out the one-timers.

As always, I would love to hear your comments. Just click the Contact Us link in the upper right and submit the form to email me.

Non-scientific, anecdotal evidence and a few little features to talk about

I'm a fairly conservative gambler. When I'm at the craps table, I'm mostly a pass-line player. And when it comes to fantasy football, I believe in building a starting lineup to play every week.

Of course bye-weeks, injuries and plain-old bad draft picks mean that now and then I need to choose between two less than optimum choices. This is the very reason I wanted to build this site.

So far we don't yet have a statistically significant sample to base any real success or failure against. But I have twice looked at StartSit.com this season for help and once I actually took it. I wished that I had taken that advice twice. This week I did, and started Hines Ward over Greg Camarillo. The choice was not crystal clear for me. Camarillo has been hotter of late and outscored Ward last week by 8 points. And the voice of StartSit.com backed up that confusion with 6 votes going evenly between Ward and Camarillo.

You might be asking, "So how did this lack of a winner help you decide?"

Well, then I looked at the StarSit.com point estimate for each player and the lean went to Ward--it was 11 points for Ward and 8 for Camarillo (Note the dead-on nature of the Ward estimate!). That play put me over the top this week in a game I ended up winning by 2 points. Camarllo's 2-fer would have left me in the tank.

Hardly scientific, but a success nonetheless.

In other site news, a few days back I put some small updates up. The My Players list is now ordered by name (last, first) and the points are rounded to the nearest integer as they are on the Player Profile pages. I also added a link to the comments section of Matchup display pages hoping to get more of you to leave a short commentary with your votes. Lastly, I added bye-week players back into the players search box so they can be viewed any time.

That's it for now,

New "My Players" feature

This new feature shows your players in a list on the left side pane along with their current StartSit.com points estimate. This allows you to have quick access to your favorite players while also encouraging users to enter a points guess with an always available link to that form.

Add players by searching them and then clicking on the "Add [player] to my players" link. Delete players from your list on your my page.

Try it out!

Charter Membership with StartSit.com

I'm looking for people to join our team. I'd like to sign up a couple dozen or so people that are willing to put a few minutes a week into voting on matchups and entering points guesses.

These charter members will be volunteers who are interested in what we're doing and want to be a bigger part of it. Charter members will (eventually) have special designation on the site and will receive some kind of schwag at year's end. Charter members will also get notified when new features are released and will have increased clout to get the features they want implemented.

For more information, click the 'contact us' link at the top right of the page and let me know you want in. The email from that form goes directly to me.

New stuff and fixed bugs

I was alerted to a matchup with only one player the other day and after I failed to see the issue in the code my wife suggested the player could be on a bye week. That's why they call her the better half.

So I fixed the bug and in the interest of keeping the leaderboard legitimate, I deleted any matchups with bye week players and any associated votes. Now when searching, players on bye weeks will not show up.

Here are a few other things that I've added this week in v.0.8 and v.0.8.1:
  • Login session now persists for 30 days. So no need to constantly log in.
  • Added RSS fee from Fantasy Football Times. Not much in the way of news, but they do post a start/bench list each week.
  • Added a contact email form. Follow the link at the top right of the site to send us a comment, question or anything else you like. I will receive it personally.
  • Fixed overall leaderboard to exclude the current week. Votes that had not yet been decided were counting as wrong and pulling down the overall results.

Here comes week 2!

I just wanted to take a quick moment to note that this week we've released several changes aimed at improving usability and flow.

Now when voting on matchups, the user is offered links to each player's page allowing a look at our basic player statistics when considering who is a better play. Click the 'back to previous page' link to return to the vote page.

Also, when viewing a matchup--either after voting on it or submitting it--the user is offered links to guess points for each player. Those links take the user to the player page where they can guess points. Once you have guessed points for a player you can view the aggregate StartSit.com point prediction for that player. A link at the top of the content will send you back to the matchup.

We've also added some information on the left side pane. We're now displaying the StartSit.com leaderboard as well as any matchups you may have posted or added to your watchlist. The posts and watchlist links will show you the current state of the voting. The leaderboard shows which users have been most accurate in their votes.

Welcome to the new StartSit.com blog!

This will be a central place to get up to date info on the state of StartSit.com. Since this is essentially a beta product, it seemed appropriate to have a place to let people know what's changed and what's happening with the site. As we roll through this inaugural season I expect there to be many bugs to fix and new features to announce.

With that in mind, I'd like to announce a little bug I found but could not fix prior to this weeks games. Points guesses could be entered for games that were already in progress or even already over. I have since fixed the issue and deleted any guesses made after kickoff for this weekend's games. Unfortunately that means no points guesses counted for Thursday's game. First week in the bank, week 2 will be better!

Thanks everyone for yor participation,
